Departure from Tijuana, Mexico:

Depart in the morning on Sunday, December 27, from Tijuana Airport for Mexico City.  Travel on to Otatitl‡n via bus. Workshop director and Tour leaders: John Gabriel and Eduardo Garcia.

 

Travel to Otatitl‡n:

Depart from Mexico City to Otatitl‡n.

 

Son Jarocho Workshop One (Otatitl‡n):

From Monday, December 28 to Saturday, January 2, daily lessons in guitarra de son (jarana, requinto), and zapateado from Master instructor Julio Mizzumi Guerrero Kojima.  Music and dance workshop in the morning hours, and afternoons spent practicing, relaxing, and visiting local sights of interest.  New YearÕs Eve Fandango on Thursday, December 31.  Friday and Saturday lectures and fieldtrips to local sites of interest, including a fandango with old musicians from the nearby town of Tlacojalpan.

 

Travel to San Andres:

       On Sunday, January 3, travel to San Andres via bus.

 

Son Jarocho Workshop Two (San Andres):

         From Monday, January 4 to Friday, January 15, daily lessons in guitarra de   son (jarana, requinto), and zapateado from Master instructors AndrŽs    Moreno, Luis Lavalle, and Maestra Diana.  On Friday, January 15,          workshop participants will have an opportunity to   participate in fandangos   in nearby villages.  Attend lectures and visit local sights of interest in the   afternoons and on the weekend after the workshop.

 

Departure from San Andres:

Travel to Veracruz City via bus on Sunday, January 17 and check in at airport for flight to Mexico City and Tijuana and return to San Diego.

 

Workshops in Otatitl‡n and San Andres will include:

á      A brief historic background of Son Jarocho in the region of Los Tuxtlas

á      Basic steps for women's sones and couple's sones

á      "Rests" and "cadences" utilized in traditional son

á      Choreography for old sones (Borracho, Jarabe Loco, Tuza, Ahualulco, etc.)

á      Basic jarana instruction and verses for old sones

á      Meetings with old soneros from the region

á      Participation in velorios (wakes) and fandangos

 

Fee and Program Coverage

 

Total cost for the 23-Day Veracruz Workshop is $1,800 per person

         Departure from Tijuana to Otatitl‡n on Sunday, December 27.

         Departure from San Andres to Tijuana on Sunday, January 17.
