June 9-13, Mon-Fri

College Music Society Summer Institute in World Music at San Diego State University

June 14, Sat

Depart from Los Angeles on Japan Airlines, 1:40 pm Overnight at Nikko Hotel in the Osaka airport area.

June 16, Mon

Arrival in Bali, Transfer to Flower Mountain

June 17. Tue

Orientation-meet the teachers and learn about their offerings, then take a trip up to Mount Batur

June 18, Wed

Galungan (Bali's New Year, and its best holiday.)

June 19. Thu

Formal classes and study groups begin

June 21, Sat

Trip to East Bali (Klungkung and Tenganan, with an optional overnight at Candi Dasa beach)

June 22, Sun

Free day, optional excursions to Ubud

June 23-27, M-F

Classes and study groups continue a second week

June 28, Sat

Kuningan, ceremonial end of the Balinese New Year

June 29, Sun

Manis Kuningan, Flower Mt. temple festival (morning) and opening ceremony and first evening concert of Payangan Festival II (late afternoon)

June 30-July 4

Third week of classes, with evening concerts at the Payangan Festival, with invited and local gamelans

July 5-6, Sat-Sun

All -day World Music and Dance performances to end the Payangan Festival. Javanese Shadow Play.

July 8-11, Tue-Fri

Optional trip to Central Java, including visits to Borobudur, Prambanan and other monuments, a royal dinner and command performance at the Mangkunegaran Palace, the 100th birthday of Pak Tjokro, Java's greatest musician, and the opening of the Yogyakarta Gamelan Festival (July 10-16).
