The most important festival of the 210-day Balinese year happens
to occur during ten days of the workshop, June 18 through June
28. All village streets are adorned with penjors, elaborate hanging
decorations made from bamboo and palm leaves. People wear special
clothing, prepare special food, socialize in happy mood, and offer
thanks to the gods. In Payangan on Kuningan night there is a very
special mystical ceremony when sacred barongs from many local
villages gather in procession at the Temple of Origin. This is
not a tourist event, but properly attired participants from the
workshop will be welcome to attend. The day after Kuningan is
the annual odalan (temple festival) at Flower Mountain, celebrated
with special festivity in the morning. The official opening of
the Payangan Festival begins in late afternoon, with special music
by the Gong Gede of Sulahan village, baris gede and rejang dances.
