Tentative Daily Schedule

 

Thursday, June 27

Depart from Los Angeles (or one of four other cities), overnight in Osaka, Japan

Saturday, June 29

Arrival in Bali from Osaka at 5:45 pm, transfer to Flower Mountain.

Sunday, June 30

General orientation, meet the teachers, tour to Batur crater and temple, sightseeing around Ubud, evening performance and dinner

Monday, July 1, through Friday, July 12 (tentative)

Breakfast - 7-8 am

Beginning Indonesian conversation, 8-9 am
Java/Sunda: gamelan, dance, puppetry classes, 9-11 am
Balinese Gamelan Angklung, 10-11 am
Culture class, lessons, discussion with artists, 11-12 am

Lunch - 12-1 pm

Bali: large ensembles, dance, puppetry classes, 1-3 pm
Africa, Middle East, India, small ensembles, 3-5 pm
(Private lessons can be scheduled at any mutually convenient time during the day)

Dinner - 5-6 pm

Selected nightly performances in Ubud village: depart 6:00 pm, return 9 pm

Special rehearsals for Payangan Festival, 6-9 pm

Saturday, July 13

Participants take part in Payagan Festival, near Flower Mountain.

Sunday, July 14

Payangan Festival continues.

Monday, July 15

Bali Only group departs at midnight via Japan, with hotel day room at Haneda Airport, arriving at LAX on Tuesday, July 16, at 11:15 am.

Optional Cultural Tour group to Central Java departs on a late morning flight to Yogyakarta and visits the Kraton Jogyakarta en route to Manohara Guest House within the park at Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist monument. Visit the museum and view an audio-visual presentation before retiring.

Tuesday, July 16

Pre-dawn ascent of Borobudur for a spectacular sunrise view of the surrounding valley and volcanoes, followed by a private tour of the monument with a leading guide. See the nearby Pawon and Candi Mendut Buddhist temples, have lunch, then visit the Prambanan Hindu temple complex en route to a hotel in Surakarta. Optional royal dinner and command performance at the Mangkunegaran Palace in the evening. (This requires a group of at least 20 people or additional contribution by members of a smaller group.)

Wednesday, July 17

Visit to STSI School of Performing Arts and the Kraton Solo in the morning. In afternoon head for the mountain town of Wonogiri for a dinner and wayang performance in the home of Ki Dalang Oemartopo, our Javanese puppetry teacher from the Bali workshop. Late night check-in at hotel in Yogyakarta.

Thursday, July 18

Morning visit to ISI Yogyakarta (University of the Arts), a batik workshop, and in the afternoon pay a visit to K. P H. (Kanjeng Pangeran Harya) Notoprojo, affectionately known as Pak Tjokro, generally considered Java's greatest living musician, now in his nineties. Return to Bali in time for an 11:50 departure to Japan, arriving in the USA on Saturday, July 19.

Participants who wish to remain for private study in Central Java will be helped to make arrangements with teachers and to find suitable accommodation. Those who wish to remain at Flower Mountain or another location in Bali may stay for up to five weeks. (Be sure to book a return flight before leaving the United States.)
