Fri July 27

A week of workshops, classes, tours, and performances begins. Teachers will include Nyoman Sumandhi, Putu Sutiati, Alex Khalil, Kaori Okada, Robert Brown, and others not yet known to you or the children. Activities include:

For Children

  • Daily gamelan and dance lessons with Balinese children of the same age.
  • Beginning lessons in Indonesian language (one of the easiest to learn in early stages).
  • Painting lessons for the girls at the Seniwati Gallery of Women's Art in Ubud village, with a teacher experienced in teaching children.
  • English language practice with village kids who already know a bit but have little chance to try conversing with English speakers.
  • Teaching games and sports to Balinese kids from the village and learning their games and sports in return.
  • Swimming at nearby Sewu Nusa resort pool, or a visit to the beach.
  • Hiking in the rice fields and visits to villages and the friendly local farmers.

For Parents

  • Parents will participate in some activities with the children, but also have their own.
  • Special classes will be held just for parents and teachers, according to interest.
  • Shopping trips with and without the kids.
  • Night owl visits to, for instance, Ubud's jazz bar, with dependable baby sitters for the children

For Teachers

  • Teachers can join in some activities with the children or parents, as they wish.
  • Special visits will be arranged to different types of schools, including Sumandhi's High School of Performing Arts and Putu's International School.
  • Meetings and discussions with other interesting Balinese educators

For everyone, we plan excursions to Neka Museum of Balinese Painting and other museums in Ubud, and will attend some of the excellent early evening performances that take place every night in Ubud. These include beautiful dances (some of which the children know), shadow plays, monkey chant, and gamelan music. We visit temples and palaces, have dinner in restaurants where the children can find both familiar food and interesting new dishes to try. The food at Flower Mountain will also be varied and delicious. We plan longer trips to East Bali and to the Batur crater and temple, so all can become acquainted very easily with the geography, culture, performing arts, and history of Bali.
