An information sheet with more details about departure, recommended clothing, health considerations, Indonesian etiquette, etc., will be sent to you later, but it can also be found on our website. Meanwhile, the following may be helpful.

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION: Cultural tours and workshops in Indonesia led by Dr. Robert E. Brown have been offered by the Center for World Music since 1971.  Most participants enjoy the broad scope and relaxed approach, and there have been quite a few repeat customers.  The Indonesian people are famous for friendliness and hospitality, and by using common sense you can normally avoid the stomach upsets or other minor illnesses that often occur on a tourist itinerary abroad.  You will be able to relax and enjoy your Indonesian visit knowing that our health success rate has been very high.

This year's Cultural Workshop for Teachers, Parents and Children grew out of a World Music in the Schools project which the Center for World Music has been developing in San Diego.  It is the latest in a long line of workshops dating back to 1971 when the first organized on-site study program in Indonesia for Javanese and Balinese performing arts was specially set up for for foreigners.  The success of many of the participants in that first group, who have used that experience to become leaders in their fields, has inspired the continuation of workshops and cultural tours over the years.  The program is designed to be flexible enough to accommodate the special interests of its participants, and will include cultural workshops, hands-on experience with Balinese music, dance, and puppetry, tours to interesting places on the island, visits to museums, and the like.  A unique feature will be the combining of Balinese and American children, most of whom are learning English in school, and this is intended to produce a wonderfully direct cross-cultural experience for both groups of children.

Before you can board the flight in Los Angeles or elsewhere in the United State (you can leave from New York, Chicago, Dallas, or San Francisco with payment of an additional fee) you are required to have a passport valid for at least an additional six months.  Sixty-day tourist visas are automatically issued to citizens of most North American or European countries at the port of entry in Indonesia.  No shots are required, but you may wish to check with your doctor for his/her recommendations.  Malaria has been eradicated from the areas we visit.  As previously stated, a detailed information sheet will be sent out later to all participants, offering advice about climate, clothing, packing, and health, as well as more detailed departure information.

Each participant is responsible for personal accident, health and travel insurance and by signing below acknowledges the intention to provide it.  Your signature absolves the Center for World Music and its Directors of any future responsibility for illness or accident during the period of the tour.

IMPORTANT:  The area we will be visiting (the island of Bali) has not been the scene of social unrest during the recent past, unlike a few other places in Indonesia.  In the unlikely event that this situation should change, we will revise the itinerary, or in the worst case scenario, cancel the trip and refund your money.
