2001 GAMELAN CAMP: Tentative Daily Schedule for Bali and Java

Tuesday, June 26

Depart from Los Angeles (or one of four other cities), overnight in Japan

Thursday, June 28

Arrival in Bali from Osaka at 5:45 pm, transfer to Flower Mountain.

Friday, June 29, through Thursday, July 5

Breakfast - 7-8 am

Beginning Indonesian Conversation - 8-9 am
Javanese Gamelan - 9-10 am
Balinese Gamelan Angklung - 10-11 am
Culture Class and discussion with artists, 11-12

Lunch - 12-1 pm

Balinese Gamelan Gong Kebyar - 1-2 pm
Balinese Dance - 2-3 pm
Balinese Wayang - 2-3 pm
Gamelan Gambang - 3-4 pm, alternate 4-5 pm
Gamelan Selunding - 4-5 pm, alternate 3-4 pm
Gender Wayang, one hour, three people in a group, 1-5 pm
(Private lessons can be scheduled at any mutually convenient time )

Dinner - 5-6 pm

Selected nightly performances in Ubud village - depart 6:30 pm, return 9 pm

Friday, July 6

Free day, with optional guided tour to Tenganan village and East Bali

Saturday, July 7

Join the Center's Cultural Tour group for 10:35 flight to Jogyakarta, arrive 10:45 (different time zone), visit Kraton Jogyakarta, lunch at Pesta Perak, and visit Pawon and Mendut temples en route to Manohara Guest House inside the park at the Borobudur, watch an audiovisual show in the evening.

Sunday, July 8

Sunrise visit to Borobudur followed by a tour of the monument with a leading professional guide. After lunch move to Pak Tjokro's kampung in Jogyakarta, with first gamelan session in the evening

Monday, July 9, through Saturday, July 15

Intensive training in gamelan, dance, or wayang, with one morning's tour to Candi Prambanan and temples in the vicinity, and one evening's trip to Surakarta for a dinner and command performance at the Mangkunegaran Palace.

Sunday, July 16

Return to Bali for evening departure to Japan, or to Flower Mountain for the Bali Tour and/or the Workshop for Teachers, Parents, and Children
