Health problems, if any __________________________________________ Your afternoon Japan Airlines flight departs from Los Angeles (or alternate city at a different time) on June 26 at 1:45 pm. You will have a free overnight and breakfast at the Nikko Hotel in Osaka, a short walk from the airport. Although you must pay a departure tax of approximately $25 the next morning, the room would normally cost about $350 and the breakfast $25, so it's a bargain! Please enclose a deposit of $200 made out to "Center for World Music"
and send to Dr. Robert E. Brown, Center for World Music, 4417 Shade Road,
La Mesa, CA 91941, as early as possible to ensure a seat on the plane.
The number of participants will be limited, with selection made on a first
come, first serve basis. Payment is fully refundable up to June 1, 2001,
if plans have to change. Otherwise, the balance will be due on that date.
The Gamelan Camp (Bali only) ends on Saturday, July 6, with departure on July 7 and arrival in Los Angeles around noon on July 8. Those who participate in the Java Camp depart from Bali on July 16, also with overnight in Japan. Participants who wish to extend their stay in Indonesia may request departure on any day (except Thursday, Friday or Saturday) up to August 22. Please indicate first and second choices if you wish to return after July 7. It is important to book your return as soon as possible because return flights fill up early and are difficult, if not impossible, to change in Indonesia. Return departure date: First choice ______________; Second choice ______________. This year's Gamelan Camp is a development from many previous workshops, which began in 1971 with the first organized on-site study program in Indonesia for Javanese and Balinese performing arts that was especially set up for foreigners. The success of many of its participants who have used that experience to become leaders in their fields has inspired the continuation of workshops and cultural tours over the years. Participants will join with this year's Cultural Tour group for several special events in Java, described elsewhere. Although aimed at members of gamelan clubs in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Australia who wish to have an intense training with leading teachers, and to bring back materials (notation, cassettes) to share with their groups, the program is also designed to be flexible enough to accommodate those who do not yet have this particular kind of background to be able to immerse themselves in a rich cultural experience through performance study. Before you can board the flight in Los Angeles or elsewhere you are required to have a passport valid for at least an additional six months. Sixty-day tourist visas are automatically issued to citizens of most North American or European countries at the port of entry in Indonesia. No shots are required, but you may wish to check with your doctor for his/her recommendations. Malaria has been eradicated from the areas we visit. As previously stated, a detailed information sheet will be sent out later to all participants, offering advice about climate, clothing, packing, and health, as well as departure information. Each participant is responsible for personal accident, health and travel insurance and by signing below acknowledges the intention to provide it. Your signature absolves the Center for World Music and its Directors of any future responsibility for illness or accident during the period of the tour. IMPORTANT: The areas we plan to visit (the island of Bali and Central Java) have not been areas of social unrest during the recent past, unlike a few other places in Indonesia. In the unlikely event that this situation should change, we will revise the itinerary, or in the worst case scenario, cancel the trip and refund your money.
