IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The Center for World Music has been offering cultural tours to Indonesia and India since 1976. Since 1994, Dr. Robert Brown, organizer of the Encounter Turkey tour and workshop, has been leading special tours in Istanbul for Semester at Sea, a round-the-world floating university organized by the University of Pittsburgh. These have included many of the special events that will be a part of Encounter Turkey--the visit to a dervish meeting, a banquet in a magnificent 16th Century setting at the S¸leymaniye Mosque complex, interactive sessions with players from the famous mehter band that represents Turkey around the world, a lively night in a taverna, Ottoman cooking classes, as well as guided tours of some of Istanbul’s great museums and mosques. In Istanbul Dr. Brown works closely with Kamil G¸ller, a fine arts specialist associated with the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. This past November, they offered nine tours for groups of students, faculty, and senior passengers of Semester at Sea, ranging in size from 8 to 350 participants. As in the yearly Indonesia tours, the emphasis is on interaction with local people, and a relaxed atmosphere that ensures a maximum of pleasant experiences. Most participants have enjoyed this approach in the past, so we plan to maintain it in Turkey. The Turkish people are known for their unflagging hospitality, warmth and honesty. You will feel safe and secure in Turkey. By using common sense you can avoid the minor illnesses that can occur on a tourist itinerary abroad, while enjoying some of the most delicious and wholesome cuisine in the world..

We leave time for shopping on the tour, and there are many bargains to be had in Turkey, especially in carpets and other woven materials, textiles and clothing, leather goods and shoes, brassware, decorated ceramic tiles, examples of calligraphy and marbled paper (an Ottoman specialty), and a wide range of other local handicrafts.

Before you board the flight in New York, you will be required to have a passport valid for at least an additional six months. Tourist visas good for three months are issued to citizens of most North American or European countries at the port of entry. The current cost of the visa is about $35.00. No shots are required, but you may wish to check with your doctor for his/her recommendations. As previously stated, detailed information will be sent out later to all participants, offering advice about climate, clothing, packing, and health, as well as some additional departure information. April, by the way, is a delightful time of year to visit Istanbul, as well as the extensive Greek archaeological remains at Ephesus.

Each participant is responsible for personal accident, health and travel insurance and by signing below acknowledges the intention to provide it. Your signature absolves the Center for World Music and its Directors of any future responsibility for illness or accident during the period of the tour.
