Central Java and Bali: Itinerary

A Week in Java
|
| Sat, June 17 |
Depart from Los Angeles on Malaysia Airlines flight
MH 93. One night stopover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Connecting
flights to Los Angeles are available at reduced fares. |
| Mon, June 19 |
Arrive in Jogyakarta, Java, via Jakarta. Transfer
to Manohara Guest House at Borobudur. Orientation to Java with an
audio-visual presentation in the evening. |
| Tue, June 20 |
Sunrise climb of the Borobudur monument. Spend the morning
visiting its miles of carved reliefs with a leading guide and scholar.
Lunch with gamelan music at Pondok Tinggal. Visit Mendut and Pawon
temples en route to Novotel Surakarta. |
| Wed, June 21 |
Morning visit to the Mangkunegaran Palace for a rehearsal
of its famous gamelan, Kyahi Kanyut Mesem, and a palace tour. Afternoon
free for rest or shopping. Special command performance at the Mangkunegaran
Palace in the evening. |
| Thu, June 22 |
Morning visit to STSI academy of the arts for a demonstration
of ceremonial gamelans and a hands-on session. Visit Kraton Solo,
then go to the town of Wonogiri for a presentation on the shadow play.
Enjoy dinner with Ki Dalang Oemartopo and his wife Ibu, followed by
a gamelan and shadow theater performance. |
| Fri, June 23 |
Early morning departure for guided visits to Prambanan,
Candi Sewu, and other ancient temples in the area, ending with a look
at the ruined palace of Ratu Boku. Evening Ramayana Ballet
at Prambanan, followed by a late hotel check-in in Jogyakarta. |
| Sat, June 24 |
Special visit to ISI Jogyakarta in the morning for a
presentation on Javanese dance, followed by a short city tour, then
arrive at Affandi Museum in late afternoon for a painting and fine
arts presentation with Kartika Affandi, followed by dinner and a folk
performance. |
| Sun, June 25 |
Morning visit to the Kraton Jogya for its weekly dance
performance, followed by a palace tour. Depart in the afternoon for
Bali Check-in at Flower Mountain, a center for the arts near
Payangan village. |

A Week in Bali
|
| Mon, June 26 |
Visit to one of Ubud's excellent art museums, then an
orientation tour of Ubud village. After lunch see the Goa Gaja
cave, Pejeng temple, and the sacred spring temple at Tampaksiring.
Evening performance in Ubud. |
| Tue, June 27 |
Morning free for shopping or just relaxing. In
the afternoon visit a Balinese textiles atelier, see the gamelan foundry
in Blahbatu and the Sukawati art market. Dinner and performance
in Ubud. |
| Wed, June 28 |
Tour to East Bali. Visit the Kertha Ghosa Hall
of Justice and museum in Klungkung en route to the famous old traditional
village of Tenganan. Return via a scenic route through the East
Bali foothills, where we stop to see on of the rare villages where
gold brocade is still woven. |
| Thu, June 29 |
In the morning visit Batur volcano and temple.
The afternoon is free: take a walking tour, travel by local bemo transport,
shop in Ubud, go to the beach, or just relax and read a book.
Optional performance in Ubud. |
| Fri, June 30 |
All-day scenic tour to Mengwi Royal Temple, a mountain
market in Bedugul, the North Coast and West Bali. |
| Sat, July 1 |
An open options day. Perhaps a visit to Kuta,
with its sandy beaches and tourist shops, or a guided trek through
some area off the tourist track. In the evening a special farewell
dinner and performance at Flower Mountain. |
| Sun, July 2 |
Morning free. Transfer to the airport for departure
in the afternoon. Overnight in Kuala Lumpur and arrival in Los
Angeles at noon July 3. |

Note: Those who wish may extend their visit up to a total
of sixty days. On July 5, a major dedication ceremony will take
place at Flower Mountain. |
The Center reserves the right to make changes in this itinerary
as may be required.
