1999 On Site Workshop
in the Arts and Cultures of Indonesia

Dr. Robert Brown, President of the Center for World Music, has been organizing on site study programs in Bali since 1971. For the past several year as a part of his second home there he has been constructing a small campus, with dormitories, faculty accommodations, classrooms and a library and outdoor theater at a beautiful and peaceful location overlooking a deep river valley in the cool foothills near Payangan, Bali.

The local name for this idyllic spot is Girikusuma, or Flower Mountain.  Situated just a short driving distance from the major cultural center of Ubud, it offers an ideal atmosphere for a rich assortment of study options in relaxed and nurturing surroundings.  In addition to the music, dance, and theater of Java and Bali, the program offers Indonesian language and cooking classes, lectures and discussions on cultural subjects, and study of Indian, African, and Turkish performing arts.

This summer will also see a major Balinese ceremony and celebration to mark the official opening of the new cultural center and the non-proft organization that has been created to support it, Yayasan Seni Dunia Tradisional (SenDuTra), the Foundation for Traditional Arts of the World.

The program is especially designed for students, teachers, and college professors, but there will also be opportunities for young people for those participants who wish to bring their families.
