1999 On Site Workshop | Study Program

1999 On Site Workshop in Indonesia: Calendar

The 1999 On Site Workshop will consist of two segments: a three-week study program in Bali, followed by a one-week tour in Central Java.

Segment I:

Three Week Workshop in Bali

Tue, July 6 Departure from LAX
Thu, July 8 Arrival in Denpasar, Bali; transfer to Payangan, short tour to Batur Volcano, Tampaksiring
Fri, July 9 General orientation, introduction to program and performance study possibilities
Sat, July 10 Organized tour to Ubud and vicinity, Peliatan dance performance in evening
Sun, July 11 Free day for personal explorations, open forum to share experiences in the evening
Mon, July 12 Regular classes begin and continue through Friday
Sat, July 17 Organized all-day tour to East Bali, Tenganan, etc.
Sun, July 18 Personal explorations day, evening open forum
Mon, July 19 Second week of classes begins
Sat, July 24 Organized tour to Bedugul, West Bali, etc.
Sun, July 25 Rehearsals and preparations for July 27 ceremony
Mon, July 26 Continue preparations, including the making of palm-leaf offerings, rehearsals
Tue, July 27 Major ceremonies (mecaru, mlaspas) to launch the new non-profit foundation, Yayasan Seni Dunia Tradisional (Foundation for Traditional Arts of the World), dedication of new buildings and an all-day presentation of performances of rare gamelans, dance, and theater, as well as student presentations.
Wed, July 28 Rest, cleanup, packing, Bali debriefing, and time for shopping and a farewell party in Ubud.
Thu, July 29 Morning departure to Yogyakarta, Central Java on Garuda Airlines, transfer to Manohara Guest House at Borobudur, where we join participants in the Center's Cultural Tour to Indonesia.  Visit audio-visual program and museum in afternoon. Orientation to Javanese culture.


Segment II:

One Week Java Tour

Fri, July 30 Sunrise visit to Borobudur monument, spend the morning visiting its miles of carved reliefs with a leading guide and scholar, lunch with gamelan music at Pondok Tinggal, visit Mendut and Pawon temples en route to Novotel Yogyakarta.
Sat, July 31 Special visit to ISI Jogya in the morning for a presentation on Javanese dance, city tour, arrive at Affandi Museum in late afternoon for painting and fine arts presentation by Kartika Affandi, followed by dinner and a folk performance.
Sun, Aug 1 Morning visit to Kraton Jogya for its weekly dance performance, followed by a palace tour, afternoon free for shopping. Optional Ramayana Ballet at Prambanan Temple in the evening.
Mon, Aug 2 Early morning departure for guided visits to Prambanan, Candi Sewu and other ancient temples, ending with the ruined palace of Ratu Boku.  Check in at Novotel Solo. Evening free.
Tue,Aug 3 Morning visit to STSI academy of the arts for a demonstration of ceremonial gamelans and a gamelan study session. Visit to Kraton Solo, then go to the town of Wonogiri for a demonstration of Javanese shadow play. Dinner with Ki Dalang Oemartopo and his wife, Ibu, followed by a village performance of music and shadow theater.
Wed, Aug 4 Morning visit to the Mangkunegaran Palace for a rehearsal of its famous gamelan, Kyahi Kanyut Mesem, and a palace tour. Afternoon free for shopping and packing. Special farewell command performance at the Mangkunegaran Palace.
Thu, Aug 5 Departure for Los Angeles, or begin independent tours or study programs in Java or Bali.  Members of the Cultural Tour group embark for Bali to begin the second week of their tour.
