Programs
Note: All programs were 50 minutes in length. A grant from the Exemplary
Arts program of the California Arts
Council allowed the Center to subsidize 50% of the program costs
of these assembly programs for the two schools participating in the
new India module of World Music in the Schools during Spring 2002.
Odissi Dance and North Indian Music
- $440
- Artists: Aruna Mohanty, Sudakshina Alagia, Yudhisthir Nayak,
and Shalini Patnaik
- Lecture-demonstration of dance movement, music essentials,
with performance of two complete dances.
- Available January 2002 only.
Gamelan and Dance of Bali - $440
- Artists: Children's Gamelan Puspa Warsa and Dancers from the
Museum School, San Diego, under the direction of Alex Khalil
- Includes demonstration and hands-on (kids teaching kids)
- Available for most of spring semester
Music of Japan - $550
- Artists: Marco Lienhard (shakuhachi flute), Masayo Ishigure (koto),
with taiko drum group
- Available during limited time span (April?). Please check back.
Masked Dance of Bali - $440
- Artists: Nyoman Sumandhi and musical group
- Special children's program using a variety of masks.
- Available from March.
Shadow Puppets of Bali - $550
- Artists: Nyoman Sumandhi, puppeteer, four musicians and dancers
- New version of a program offered successfully in spring, 2000
- Available from March
Music and Folklore of Finland -
$330
- Artist: Merje Soria, the leading presenter in the United States
- A popular program with children
- Involves singing, stories and hands-on experience with the kantele,
a small Finnish zither
- Available all semester.
Music of Iran - $220
- Artists: Farhad Bahrami and his 10-year-old son
- Persian drumming and stringed instruments charmingly presented
by a father/son team that appeals to children
- Available all semester.
