Rainforest Music

Rhythms and Arts of Malaysian Borneo

6 p.m. Lecture demonstration on Sarawak ikat weaving and batik
7 p.m. Music and dance from Borneo and mainland Malaysia
The Neurosciences Institute, 10640 John Jay Hopkins Drive, La Jolla, CA. General admission $12, CWM members/students/ seniors, $6. (Membership available in the lobby)

A team of seven master musicians and artisans from Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, will perform in seven US and three Canadian cities, commencing with our San Diego event on June 1.

North Americans will for the first time be able to experience the unique and delicate sape lute music as presented by Lan-E-Tuyang. When sape music first hit the global stage at the Worldwide Music Expo in Marseilles, France in 1997, some members of the audience are said to have been moved to tears.

Beautifully costumed dancers from the long house river cultures of Borneo will perform the traditional hornbill dance, which imitates the silent flight of that unusual and colorful bird through the rain forest.

Before the concert proper begins, the audience will have an unusual opportunity to view famous artisans demonstrate the ancient arts of ikat weaving and batik making. Textile items will be available for sale, as will CDs of the music.

Traditional dances from mainland Malaysia, showing the mix of Chinese, Indian, Arab, and Malay cultures round out this unique program.

The tour is sponsored by Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines, Sarawak Tourism Board, and North America Asean Consultants.

Don't miss the traditional textiles demonstration at 6 p.m. by a well-known Dayak ikat weaver and a batik maker, presented by Malaysia's leading expert. Refreshments will be available in the lobby.

DOOR PRIZE: Malaysia Airlines plans to give away a round-trip ticket to Malaysia to the holder of the lucky ticket stub, and other prizes will also be awarded at the concert.

In the 1970s he was the director of the Center for the Preservation and Propagation of Traditional Iranian Music in Tehran and Chavoosh Conservatory. He contributed for many years to Iranian National Radio and Television and founded the group Sheyda, which was instrumental in the revival of Iranian traditional music.
