Prasanna

India Beckons, South Indian classical music recital featuring Prasanna, a leading performer of Indian music on the electric guitar, accompanied by Lakshman Mahadevan on mridangam. 7 p.m., Challenger Middle School Auditorium, 10810 Parkdale Avenue, Mira Mesa. General admission $25, $20, $15.

The proceeds of this concert will go towards the efforts of the Association for India's Development (A.I.D.) in supporting grassroots developmental projects in India. Cosponsored by the Center and A.I.D. San Diego.

BALI ARTS FESTIVAL
at The San Diego Children's Museum

Sumandhi

Balinese Shadow Puppet Theater, featuring Balinese puppet master I Nyoman Sumandhi. Bapak Sumandhi, the Center's current artist in residence, will enact a story from the Mahabharata, with accompanying musicians from Bali. 9 p.m., The Children's Museum, 200 West Island Ave, San Diego (directions below). Sumandhi's appearance is part of an all day arts festival.

Performances at the Museum during the day will in include Balinese masked dance by Sumandhi, 1 p.m.; Odissi dance from India by the Patnaik sisters, 2 p.m.; and North Indian vocal music by Sudakshina Alagia, 3 p.m. Please contact the Museum regarding admission fees.

Directions: The Children's Museum is in downtown San Diego, near the convention center, between Union and Front Streets, just south of Market.

SumandhiDancerShadow

Bali Festival for Children
presented in cooperation with the Asian Story Theater

Featuring Dalang I Nyoman Sumandhi. A special performance of a variety of Balinese arts including Wayang (shadow puppetry), Topeng (masked dance), kecak ("monkey chant") and various types of Balinese gamelan music. Many of the performers in this event are children of the Museum School, and members of its special performing Gamelan troupe, Puspa Warsa.

2 p.m., Lyceum Theater, Horton Plaza (doors open 12:30 p.m.). General admission $8, children $6, groups (over 10) $5/person.

Puppet Master I Nyoman Sumandhi will perform the shadow play Dharma Wangsa Dadi Curu ("The Sacrifice of Yudhishthira") from the great epic Mahabharata, in the traditional style, outdoors. He will be accompanied by I Wayang Sutartha and I Wayan Winata on gender (metalophones). Please dress warmly and bring blanket/cushion for lawn seating.

Sounds of India, featuring Kartik Seshadri, joined in concert by several of India's outstanding musicians touring from Calcutta: Shubhra Guha (vocal), Vijay Kumar Kichlu (vocal) and Tejendra Majumdar (sarod). These solo artists will be accompanied on tabla by Tanmoy Bose and Arup Chattopadhyay.
