| Masters
of Persian Classical Music Mohammad Reza Shajarian, Hossein Alizadeh, Kayhan Kalhor with Homayoun Shajarian, on their first ever U.S. tour. Wednesday, January 31, 2001,
7:30 pm "Traditional Iranian music is a message, a call from the artist's inmost consciousness, which is tightly linked to his age-old history and culture," says Mohammed Reza Shajarian. Intensely spiritual, expressively ornamented, and richly poetic, Persian classical music has been admired and emulated by artists in the East and the West for centuries. Three masters representing three periods of classical Persian music -- all superstars in their native Iran -- come together for the first time in the United States for this concert tour. Vocalist Mohammad Reza Shajarian's technical mastery and emotionally intense style have been recognized by UNESCO's Picasso Award, one of Europe's highest honors. Hossein Alizadeh is a prominent composer and performer on tar (plucked lute), and Kayhan Kalhor is a master of the kamancheh, the traditional "spiked" fiddle or bowed lute. Tickets are $35/$25 (CWM members receive a $2 discount) Sponsored by: World Music Institute, Persian Cultural Center, Zaman Prodcutions, the Center for World Music, and Darvak |
