Lakshmi is the only daughter of the legendary
dancer T. Balasaraswati. She is recognized as one of very few
dancers maintaining the bharata natyam tradition as it was codified
in the early 19th century, and is one of Indias
most highly regarded dancers. Her intimate approach is founded
in direct and accessible expression, and features improvisation,
for which her mother was famed, and Lakshmi is unique.
T.
Viswanathan, flute and vocal, is one of Indias most
respected and honored musicians, and is the recipient of numerous
awards and citations. He is recognized equally for his genius
as a teacher; He has been teaching and performing in the US for
more than thirty years, and is the first Indian artist to be named
a "National Heritage Fellow" by the National Endowment
for the Arts for his contribution to American culture. A doctorate
in Ethnomusicology, he is currently on the music faculty at Wesleyan
University.
Aniruddha
Knight, dancer and vocalist, learns music and dance from his
mother Lakshmi, his great-uncle Viswanathan and his great-aunt
Muktha. He has been performing as a dancer and as a vocal accompanist
for his mother for several years. He is the recipient of an "Apprenticeship
Award" from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
Douglas Knight, percussion, has been performing
with Lakshmi, as well as other distinguished artists, for more
than twenty years. He has taught in the Universities of Washington,
Wisconsin, UCLA and the Center for World Music in Berkeley.
S. Vidya, dance master, has been a Visiting Artist with
Bala Music & Dance for several years. She learned music and
dance from several distinguished teachers, including the famed
Kittappa Pillai, her mother Saraswathi, and Lakshmi. She is an
experienced teacher and a noted performer, and supports Lakshmi
both in the U.S. and India.
